South East Writers (SEW) – Terms & Conditions of Membership
The Fine Print (but not too fine—we’re writers, not lawyers)
1. Who Can Join?
If you’re 18 or over and you love writing—or at least talking about writing over a cup of tea—you’re in the right place. SEW welcomes everyone from closet poets to seasoned novelists, note scribblers to grammar nerds. No secret handshakes required.
2. Types of Membership & What It Costs
We offer a few ways to get involved, depending on your preferences and your proximity to snacks at the meetings:
-
Full Membership – for those who want it all: live events, workshops, writerly hugs (figurative, of course), and online resources.
-
Online Membership – perfect if you prefer pyjamas and prose from the comfort of your home.
-
Guest Attendance – your first meeting is on us. After that, we’d love for you to join the club and stick around.
Membership runs until the end of October, like a literary pumpkin carriage. Fees are reviewed annually (but we promise not to break the bank).
3. Play Nice: Our Code of Conduct
We’re all here to grow, share, and improve—without being a pain in the pen. So, we ask that you:
-
Be respectful and encouraging (even when someone reads their 47th haiku).
-
Avoid any discriminatory or disruptive behaviour (no drama outside of fiction, please).
-
Keep what’s shared in the group confidential, especially sensitive or personal writing.
If someone does breach the code, we may ask them to take a break—or a permanent holiday from membership. But we’d rather not go there.
4. Sharing Your Work
Got a story, poem, or novel you’re proud of? Awesome! You retain full ownership of your work, but by submitting it to SEW (for the website, newsletter, or meeting), you’re giving us permission to share it with our community—unless you say otherwise (nicely).
We’ll never sell it to Hollywood. Unless you want us to.
5. Privacy (Because We All Hate Spam)
We’ll only use your contact details to share SEW news, event invites, and the occasional burst of creative inspiration. We won’t sell your email to a shady marketer or sign you up to weird newsletters.
Unsubscribing is just a click away, no guilt trips involved.
6. Website Perks
As a member, you can:
-
Feature your published books on our website (with a link to your sales site so you can retire early).
-
Share short stories, poems, or articles—we love seeing what you’ve been up to.
All content will be lightly moderated, mostly to protect us from typos and accidental scandal.
7. Get Involved – It’s More Fun Than It Sounds
SEW is run by volunteers who are passionate about writing, community, and getting the chairs out before each meeting. If you’d like to help shape the group’s future (or just want to wear a badge), talk to us about joining the committee or helping out behind the scenes.
8. Small Print About Changing the Small Print
Every now and then, we may tweak these terms (not dramatically—just a comma here, a chuckle there). If anything major changes, we’ll let you know via email or at the next meeting.
